And did you know? Several explanations are advanced as to the origin of the name "Jeep", which is pronounced "djip" in English.

It is traditionally accepted that this name refers to the initial project proposed under the code name "Ford GP-W". “GP” would stand for either “General Purpose” or “Government Purposes”. The word “jeep” could therefore come from this acronym “GP”, pronounced in English “dji pi”.

 

 Others suggest that the name "jeep" comes from the Popeye comic strip, where an imaginary animal named Eugene the jeep appeared in March 1936.

“Jeep” is then an onomatopoeia usually used by designers to imitate the cry of a baby bird. Clever and possessing extraordinary faculties, this little jungle animal is capable of getting out of difficult situations. This nickname of "jeep" would then be attributed to the vehicle because of its exceptional characteristics.

 

The acronym "Just Enough Essential Parts" is another possible explanation. The first series of these vehicles was designed to be as simple and inexpensive as possible: the car was minimalist, without any comfort, and built for a short service life.
