This model was presented in 1972, and is considered a response to theHonda CB 750 Four, released four years earlier, Honda having heard of Kawasaki's desire to convert to 4-stroke and also design a 4-cylinder motorcycle initially planned for 750 cm3; Honda engineers have therefore worked hard to pull the rug out from under Kawasaki's feet and hastily released the CB 750. This haste also explains a few small errors of youth on the Honda but above all aroused disappointment and frustration to the Kawasaki design office, which returned to the drawing board to outbid by designing the unimaginable for the time: a super "oven" larger and more powerful than its Honda competitor and the 900 Z called on technical solutions even more successful for the time.
